Afraid Desperate Housewives would lose its edge without Nicolette Sheridan’s Edie around? You can fuhgettaboutit.
Emmy-winning Sopranos heroine Drea de Matteo is joining the cast as Wisteria Lane’s newest vixenish housewife, sources confirm to me exclusively.
De Matteo, who will be a series regular, will play the matriarch of a new Italian family. Casting is underway for her landscape designer husband and their tightly wound son.
Thoughts? IMHO, this is the second coolest piece of casting of the 2009-10 season (behind Katee Sackhoff joining 24, natch). Agree?
The Desperate Housewives finale definitely had a few shockers, on top of a major cliffhanger (a wedding with a faceless bride), and it was so good that some critics predict that the ABC dramedy may just be back to the Emmy’s race this season.
To refresh your memory, the season 5 finale saw the unfolding of Dave’s long-winded revenge plot that could’ve taken the lives of Susan and cute MJ. Elsewhere, Lynette found out that she was pregnant (again) with twins (again), just as Tom found out he was on his way back to school. And Gaby welcomed what she thought was a harmless little thing to their home (Carlos’ niece) but turned out to be a feisty little thing instead.
ABC reports, meanwhile, that the upcoming season of Desperate Housewives will feature the return of Susan’s daughter Julie (played by Andrea Bowen) as well as her daddy Karl (played by Richard Burgi) for several episodes. Susan made a brief return on season 5 when she came home with her boyfriend from college, who turned out to be her thrice-married 40-year-old college professor. Karl, meanwhile, was hired by Bree to represent her during her divorce from Orson on season 5.
We also received word that Gaby’s feisty nice Ana (played by Maiara Walsh) will start to be a regular on the show come next season and will reportedly start to complicate her life. Elsewhere, the love triangle involving Susan, Mike, and Katherine will persist despite the marriage, while Lynette’s unexpected pregnancy will test her family’s resolve.
On the spin-off idea, there is still no word if ABC is considering picking up a Desperate Housewives spin-off starring Lily Tomlin and Kathryn Joosten, who play scheming sisters Roberta and Karen McCluskey on the series.
Here’s an interview from Digital Spy with Kyle MacLachlan (Orson Hodge) as he talks about his character and the future on Desperate Housewives
