Desperate Housewives had one of those slow-burn episodes when it returned for Season Five last Sunday, but there were a few high points that leave me optimistic the catty action will accelerate soon, most notably the reappearance of Edie with her new freaktastic hubby Dave Williams. If that weirdo ain’t hiding a doozie of the mentally impaired kind in his closet, I’ve got a bridge in the Big Apple to sell you…

The show’s upcoming October 5 episode is called “We’re So Happy You’re So Happy,” and already I’m suspecting nobody on it is gonna stay happy for long. Lynette will see a new side of her son Porter, Susan will have to deal with the men in her life some more, Gaby will confront her loss of status in the rich-and-fab lane, Bree will have a stressful time attending to professional and personal business, and Edie will realize hostility is alive and exceedingly well on Wisteria Lane.

But the best part I’m saving for last: Good old, reliable, nosy Mrs. McCluskey will start digging into Dangerous Dave’s business. I hope that recent Emmy win for Kathryn Joosten means my favorite busybody is in no danger of getting offed by the town’s latest head case.

In the sneak peek after the jump, still svelte Bree pays newly dumpy Gaby a visit. What was that I said about not being happy?

That’s the answer to the big lingering question about Desperate Housewives, which returns Sunday at 9 p.m. on ABC. Did the five year jump the show took in the fourth season finale work?

I’ve seen the first two episodes of the season and I’m so relieved to report that the show is back on track. The time travel corrects some of the core problems that had stymied the series and returns the series to its season one entertaining combination of mystery, camp, humor and wit. Gabrielle (Eva Longoria Parker) and Susan (Teri Hatcher) benefit the most from the flash forward.

My main complaint with Gabby had been that she needed a purpose in life. Constantly watching her go shopping and get her nails done had turned her into a character that was so shallow it had become challenging to care about what was happening with her. Now a makeup-less Gabby has two children and is adjusting to a life without a social status. In the premiere, Gabby is struggling with the fact that her daughters are overweight. Longoria Parker hits the exact right note of a mother who loves her children but is somewhat selfishly concerned with their appearance. The story line lets Gabby evolve while keeping her true to her character.

Susan’s more serious story line (which I won’t spoil here) strips her of her silly pratfalls but you still feel like you’re watching Susan. And I think that holds true for all the characters. This reset of the timeline propels them forward but does not totally forget their past or make them into completely new characters.

The best best news is the arrival of Neal McDonough’s Dave. He sweeps into Wisteria Lane and brings this season’s mystery right along with him. By now we’ve learned that the season long mystery makes or breaks the show and Dave’s looks like it is going to be a doozy.

On the highly anticipated season premiere of “Desperate Housewives,” five years have passed since Katherine shot her ex-husband as Susan, Lynette, Bree and Gaby stood together in solidarity to protect her. Susan tries to hide her relationship with a new man; Gaby questions her abilities as a mom; Bree is on the verge of publishing her own cookbook as business partner, Katherine, grows envious; Lynette catches her teenaged twins spearheading illegal activities; and Edie returns to Wisteria Lane in jaw-dropping fashion with a new man in tow.

Yep, this is going to be one interesting episode!

SIR PAUL MCCARTNEY’s ex-wife HEATHER MILLS was all set to appear in hit U.S. TV show DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES - until actress EVA LONGORIA PARKER demanded she be dropped from the cast.

The former glamour model’s ex-publicist, Michele Elyzabeth, insists that Mills is “desperate” to make a name for herself in Hollywood and advised her to secure her a role on a high profile TV series.

And Elyzabeth reveals that Mills was close to appearing in Desperate Housewives, until Longoria Parker objected to the decision.

Elyzabeth says, “Heather was desperate to live in America. She wanted to be accepted by Hollywood in any way. I tried to get her on Desperate Housewives in a little cameo.

“The producer was keen. I reckon they saw the chance to get some headlines for the show. But when the stars discussed it, Eva Longoria was totally against it. She demanded Heather be dropped from consideration.”

And Elyzabeth insists that Desperate Housewives wasn’t the only show she tried to get Mills onto.

She adds, “I even had discussion with the bosses of Ugly Betty, but they gave me a flat no. The major TV shows over there just didn’t think Heather fitted in anywhere.”

No wonder people have called “Desperate Housewives” “Sex and the Suburbs.” Like HBO’s once-popular “Sex and the City,” this sexually tamer but equally smart ABC show features a group of female friends who experience life at its quirkiest and frequently get together to talk about their feelings and frustrations. One of their circle–make that a former member–even provides a Carrie Bradshaw-style voiceover and tries to put things into philosophizing perspective.

But this darling of a debut series begs comparison to more than a single show. Besides the female bonding and sexual shenanigans, there’s also plenty of “Sopranos”-style family intrigue, mischief, mayhem, and even murder. Creator Marc Cherry (”The Golden Girls”) revived his career and created an international television phenomenon (it’s seen in more than 100 countries) by combining three genres: soap opera, mystery, and situation comedy, and a terrific ensemble cast manages to pull off this genre juggling act with plenty of zest and flair.

Teri Hatcher oozes believability as Susan, a children’s book illustrator who, like most of the women of Wisteria Lane, doesn’t really work all that much. She’s a neurotic ex-divorcee with a level-headed daughter (Andrea Bowen) and a husband named Mike (James Denton), a neighborhood plumber hooked on pain pills. Susan is desperate to try to help him. Then there’s Bree Van De Camp (Marcia Cross), the Martha Stewart clone whose veneer of perfection has been scratched and punctured so many times that it would cause a lesser woman to cave in. But not Bree, who will resort to breaking-and-entering to steal a newcomer’s recipe to stay on top. Her husband, Orson (Kyle MacLachlan), has always seemed a little weird, even for a dentist, and he’s got a secret of his own involving poor Mike. But together, their ruse is that Bree is pregnant. The plan? Bree’s daughter (Joy Lauren), who’s really pregnant, is locked away in a convent until the day the baby pops out and Bree and Orson can walk the suburban streets with parental pride. Of course, not everything will go according to plan. It doesn’t get more desperate than that.

Well, I stand corrected. When feisty little housewife Gabrielle Solis (Eva Longoria Parker) discovers that Victor Lang (John Slattery), the town mayor she just married, isn’t the man for her after all, things get so desperate that the police take an interest. But it’s all so complicated, because the man she’s having an affair with is her former husband Carlos (Ricardo Chavira), who in turn is being emotionally blackmailed by their former friend Edie (Nicollette Sheridan).

Then there’s Lynette Scavo (Felicity Huffman), who has to endure visits not only from her husband’s “love child” but the kid’s mom as well. But that pales compared to the cancer she’s fighting and trying to hide from her friends, while her husband Tom (Doug Savant) tries to pick up the slack by riding herd on their misbehaving kids.

New to the neighborhood is a gay couple (Tuc Watkins and Kevin Rahm) who shake things up with, of all things, a fountain, and a woman who returns to the house where she had lived with a previous spouse. And Katherine Mayfair (Dana Delaney) and her gyno husband and daughter (Nathan Fillion, Lyndsy Fonseca) shake things up the most, if you count just how many individual lives they vex and confound.

This is the year of hospitals, and the year a tornado comes to Wisteria Lane. Oddly enough, that storm episode Cherry & Co. seem most proud of is the one that I felt seemed the weakest. Maybe it’s because I once outran a tornado on the interstate or because we get tornado watches and warnings all the time in the Midwest, so that you really only do something when the sirens sound. The details we get in this show–going to the store and stocking provisions, taping window glass, watching the weather-service to track the storm as it comes closer, and even the high winds that whirl for a LONG time before the funnel even appears–feel a lot closer to what we experienced in the Caribbean when a tropical storm or hurricane approached. But that’s a nit-picky criticism.

People who loved Season One will rejoice that the show is most certainly on-track this fourth season. The writing is smart, there are tons of cliffhangers, and we continue to care about the characters–even minor ones like old Mrs. McCluskey (Kathryn Joosten). It’s the small touches, though, that make this show the success it’s become. Our sense of what we know is constantly being challenged. Just about the time we think we’re learning something or figuring out one of the many teaser secrets and mysteries that swirl around, something happens to undercut that. Example? New housewife Katherine and her husband have a secret they allude to, something that happened in Chicago. But there’s also a question over why they moved back, why she won’t let her daughter in the room that was formerly hers, and why her daughter doesn’t remember anything. First we think it’s one thing, but then just about the time you start to think more favorably toward Katherine, you see that she’s been lying or faking it again.

London, Aug 19 (IANS) Actress Felicity Huffman got the role in the hit TV show “Desperate Housewives” after an audition where she complained about the troubles of motherhood.Huffman has three children and she walked into the audition all distressed, reports contactmusic.com. She then told the agents, “I’m losing my mind.”

The actress added: “The women pulled back from me as if I’d said, ‘I eat babies’. I felt such shame and remorse and humiliation. And I guess that’s exactly what they wanted for (my character) Lynette.

“I’d just left two screaming kids in the bathtub and it was raining. I thought I pulled myself together well. Later on, one of the producers said, ‘It was so great because you were such a mess and so frazzled, and your pants were filthy!’”

We’ve talked about Eva Longoria and her numerous pregnancy rumors (some, perhaps, started by, *cough*, us), but her boss, Marc Cherry, creator and executive producer of Desperate Housewives, has some news about Eva and it concerns - you guessed it - babies!

Cherry told Us Weekly, “Eva is desperately trying to get pregnant with [husband] Tony Parker.

“After they phone their doctor, she promised me I will be the next call.”

Eva, 33, is going to play a mom on the new season of Desperate Housewives, so she was asked to gain a bit of weight and she has to wear padding to help achieve a ‘frumpy mom and housewife’ look.  Although, if you look at this photo, you’d swear she was really pregnant.  Sure, it could be my over-active imagination or my medication not working, either, or.

Marc adds, explaining about the ‘five year advance’ of the show, “Gaby is having a very tough time being the mother of two overweight, hyperactive children.  But Eva is having a marvelous time playing her!”

And Eva’s hubby Tony said in an interview with Le Parisien newspaper, that he was anxious to start a family.  “That would be even better than my NBA titles, even if I don’t compare private life and sports.  Eva talks to me about it all the time.

“I’d like to have girls, because I come from a world of boys.”

See?  One of these days, one of those bump rumors will be true!

Eva Longoria Parker is planning to follow in the footsteps of pal Victoria Beckham and bring out her own designer range. Beckham currently designs her own range of jeans and Longoria Parker is considering taking some time out from acting to launch her own collection.

“I would love to design one day. I do not have the time right now but I would love to develop a home line or a clothing line. So we will see what comes first,” Contactmusic quoted Eva, as saying. “I am thinking about it,” she added.

The Desperate Housewives star is already compiling ideas for a possible style venture. She said: “My definition of style is comfort. I have to be comfortable, so that would most likely the line I would take.”

If reports are to be believed, it was fate that had Desperate Housewives‘ Eva Longoria and former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham teaming up to open a special restaurant in Las Vegas.  It was said that Hollywood couple Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore introduced the two wives to the game.

Longoria will supposedly handle the food aspect of things, as the second branch of her Beso eatery franchise, while Beckham will take care of the casino, which will be the nightspot’s other attraction.  According to a source, the two are very excited at the business venture.

“Eva owns a restaurant called Beso in Hollywood and is set to launch another in Vegas,” confirms a source.  “She asked Victoria to come on board and help. Victoria was thrilled and talked it through with her husband David.  But he thought she was spreading herself a bit thin and should concentrate on what she would good at - running and successful fashion line and looking after the family.’

The star of Desperate Housewives, 33, is married to basketball star Tony Parker, while Beckham, 34, is married to international football sensation David Beckham.

“Eva and Victoria are obsessed with the game and spend most of their evenings going out for a civilized meal and then getting stuck into a meaty tournament.  But they realized there are no venues which provide dinner and focus on this new Hollywood craze.

“So when Eva said she was opening a new branch of Beso in the gambling capital of the world, Victoria had the brainwave of turning it into a place which specializes in food and their favorite game.  Eva will oversee the restaurant, while Victoria channels her energies into the casino.”

The second installment of Beso will serve food by celebrity chef Todd English.

Desperate Housewives returns on ABC on September 28.

The child, named Belen Elysabeth Chavira, weighed 7 lbs., 12 oz. when she was born at 5:59 p.m. in San Antonio. The couple already has a son, Tomas, 5. They were married in 2007.
